Poems My Grandmother Taught Me

Fireflies

Look at all the Fireflies
Isn’t that a sight?
Their little bodies glowing
With a white or yellow light.
I guess the other bugs and beetles
Who have to roam at night,
Call to them and use them
As a little flashlight.
Suppose a busy Spider,
Who has lagged a bit,
And hasn’t finished spinning,
Calls out to it,
And the little Firefly
Lets itself glow,
And the web is finished.
Now I really don’t know,
But I be the Turtle,
Who’s been out to roam,
And has gone too far
To find the way home,
Calls the little Firefly
And he shines his light,
And the pokey Turtle finds
His way home at night.
And I really do believe
For bugs and crawly things,
He hovers over them
With little flapping wings,
And in the dead of night
He’s their traffic light!
Yellow means caution,
White means go,
And that’s the real reason
Why Fireflies glow!
