Poems My Grandmother Taught Me

Mrs. Hen Went Calling

Mrs. Hen went calling
On her friend Mrs. Cow,
She said to her chickens,
“Now I might allow
You to go, too
If you do as I do.

“Walk sedately
With your feathers just so,
Don’t scratch around,
Or we just won’t go.”
They promised to be good
As all chickens should.

They started out fine.
But before very long
They began to scratch,
Though they knew it was wrong.
And they didn’t worry,
Though mother said, “Hurry!”

So she just left them scratching
Right there in the lane,
And went back home.
But she made it plain,
When she next went to call,
They’d stay home, one and all!
