Poems My Grandmother Taught Me

The Seashore

When I went down to the seashore,
I thought it was such fun!
I love to hear the ocean roar
Like it’s mad at everyone.
I love to feel the sand ooze through
My toes, each step I take.
The ocean in a gulp or two
Will swallow forts I make.
I hunt for pretty shells the tide
Washes up on land.
I never know just what might hide
Underneath the sand.
But the ocean just will not behave,
Whenever I am in it!
I’m pushed one way by a foamy wave,
And in another minute,
Another big wave rushes by
And pulls me back again.
And since I’m only just so high,
It’s hard to stand up then.
Those waves don’t know which way to go!
But mother calls it undertow.
