Poems My Grandmother Taught Me

Matey

Once we had a canary,
And his name was Matey,
But after awhile we found
We should have called him Katey.
Anyway, one day someone
Forgot to lock the cage door,
And Matey pushed it open,
And flew down to the floor.
Next he flew up on a lamp,
Then down upon an ashtray.
Every time we tried to catch him,
He would fly away.
Finally he perched
On the chandelier,
And he wouldn’t budge,
Though we begged, “Come here!”
We all got disgusted,
And said, “Let him roam!”
But he liked it so much
He made it his home!
